Joining the Wiltshire Health and Care team

Apprentices aim towards a work-based qualification either at:

  • Level 2 (Intermediate)
  • Level 3 (Advanced)
  • Level 4/5 (Higher)

Apprenticeships relate directly to the role that you work in, e.g. Business and Administration, Accountancy, or Health and Social Care.

Each apprenticeship can last between one and two years and you can progress through the different levels as part of your development pathway.

On finishing, you can apply for a permanent NHS role; on completion of the Higher Apprenticeship you may be supported to gain your pre-registration nursing qualification.

Apprenticeships are an alternative to traditional academic qualifications and can be used to meet entry requirements for some degree courses.

Do you qualify?

Whatever your academic qualifications, there’s likely to be an apprenticeship to suit you.

  • Level 2 (Intermediate)
    This is more values based, but will need D in Maths and English and ability to pass literacy and numeracy assessments.
  • Level 3 (Advanced)
    You will need a level 2 qualification and level 1 functional skills or Grade C or D Maths and English. You might also require some experience in the vocational field.
  • Level 4/5 (Higher)
    You will need a level 3 qualification and Maths and English Grade A-C or level 2 functional skills. You might also require some experience in the vocational field.

Training and study

This varies according to the level.

For example, Level 2 Business and Administration involves work-based training and assessment; others include one day per week study in college.

Benefits
Level 2 Apprentices are paid £125.00 per week, and they can take advantages of other benefits including a free monthly bus pass and a £500 bonus upon completion.

Salaries for the other levels are higher – raising to NHS Band 3 for a Level 5 health and social care apprentice.

Become an apprentice

Apprentices are employed by Wiltshire Health and Care LLP, but continue their education (e.g. towards QCF Level 2, QCF Level 3 or Foundation Degree) at the same time.

Each apprenticeship will take between one and two years, depending on the level.

The successful completion of an apprenticeship will often lead to a permanent NHS role.

Switch from another healthcare role

Many of the qualities required in a particular role are transferable to other similar jobs.

If you already work in healthcare, consider applying for a different job in the NHS – we value previous experience and expertise, so you might be just the person we’re looking for.

Follow on from your full-time studies

Some of the careers in the NHS require formal qualifications – e.g. a degree from a university.

The entry requirements for each degree course may differ depending on the university.
