Our services will work together in integrated ways in partnership with patients, GPs and hospitals

Wiltshire Orthopaedic Network

What is the service and what does it offer?

The Wiltshire Orthopaedic Network (WON) is a musculoskeletal assessment service run by Extended Scope Practitioners (ESPs). An ESP is a Physiotherapist who has specialist and in-depth knowledge of their musculoskeletal field. ESPs do not tend to do ‘hands on’ physiotherapy treatment. Their role is to look at all of the available options to manage musculoskeletal complaints. They can look at a range of treatment options such as: Injection Therapy; Physiotherapy; or onward referral to other specialities, such as Orthopaedics to consider surgery or Pain Management services.

The aim of the service is to identify the best treatment options for the patient and then to make sure that any investigations or non-surgical treatments have already been done prior to a secondary care consultant appointment. For those patients who do not need to see a hospital Consultant, options for treatment in the community or an outpatient setting can be explored. We aim to discuss diagnosis and relevant treatment options with each patient actively participating in their onward referral choice. This service is available for south and west locality patients.

How to access the service

The service can be accessed following a referral from a health care professional.
