New Learning & Development Hub at Savernake Community Hospital

Wiltshire Health and Care is opening a new Learning and Development Hub at Savernake Community Hospital in Marlborough in December to help combat locally the national shortage of nurses and to ensure continued provision of quality care for patients in their preferred community settings.

The Learning and Development Hub will be a training base for people who want to progress a career in nursing or care. It will develop Individuals to care for patients in their own homes or in a community hospital, to recognise and look after patients who become ill and prevent them going into hospital or help people to return home quicker after a stay in hospital. Patients prefer to be cared for in the community and this is where they will make the best recovery.

Vanessa Ongley, Learning and Development Lead for Wiltshire Health and Care said: “This is really exciting! We are offering support for people in a career where they can make a real difference to people’s lives. People can start at any stage in their career; we’ll support registered nurses to achieve advanced practice qualifications or support care workers with nursing aspirations to develop their skills. We are also offering nurses and therapists returning from a career break fully funded return to practice posts.”

Marlborough has been selected as a site for this hub because of the broad type of care offered there; a community hospital, community teams, learning disability services and nursing and therapy. The community inpatient ward at Savernake Hospital is also changing to a designated rehabilitation ward alongside a traditional community hospital ward.

The 30% decrease in the number of people applying nationally to study nursing over the last 2 years has affected Wiltshire. It is hoped the Learning and Development Hub will help alleviate this.
